Blogapalooza
Blogapalooza exists in order for me to share my ideas with other music journalists. I recently moved to Halifax this past summer with my partner. We were travelling throughout the Maritimes and randomly ended up here. Halifax has a lot to offer and I am glad to call it home.
Before we set out on our travels we were living in Toronto, where I grew up. I've been playing drums since I was ten and I'm a beginner guitarist. I went to University for a few years but decided it was not how I wanted to spend my time. Since then I have worked a lot....and now I have decided I need to pursue my own interests. Needless to say I am trying to pursue many interests at once! Along with music and writing, I am very interested in photography, animal liberation, feminist/gender/queer politics, food politics, and other kinds of activism. I listen to a wide variety of music. I really like electro and techno as well as punk and rock.
To find out more about me just go to my myspace!

Tom Fun Orchestra and Dance Electric |
OCTOBER 22, 2007
I arrived late and missed Kate Makis performance at the Seahorse on Saturday night, but I managed to catch Dance Electric play a great set. Dance Electric played remarkably well for such a young age, not to mention the drummer and bassist were fucking solid. Dance Electric sound like a mix of Refused and screamo. They had a lot of energy and a great sense of humour, so they managed to keep the audience entertained. I have a feeling this band will be the next big thing by
the time next years Pop Explosion rolls around.
Another band played after Dance Electric that werent on the original lineup. I think they were called Modeen. Their music was a rock and rollin contrast to Dance Electrics ...

Canzine East |
OCTOBER 22, 2007
Canzine, Canadas largest zine festival, took place in Halifax Saturday. Canzine East was organized by Broken Pencil, an indie art and culture magazine based in Toronto. Writers sold their zines and workshops and events took place throughout the day. I bought a few zines from the Halifax Coalition Against Poverty and from some other authors. Last year, I attended the much larger Canzine festival in Toronto at the Gladstone Hotel. I found Canzine East did not have as much artwork as the festival in Toronto, but it was certainly less chaotic.
Canzine is a great outlet for writers to sell and promote their work and make connections with other writers. However, I feel that many of the zine...

Just Friends Brunch |
OCTOBER 20, 2007
Although Just Friends Records’ idea of having a musical brunch at Gus’ Pub was original, it could have been planned a lot better. I originally went to Gus’ Pub YESTERDAY morning because there were two different dates listed in the Halifax Pop Explosion guide. The venue was too small for an event of this size: many people were left with nowhere to sit, the only server was slow and confused, and I had to wait in a crowded lineup of people 15 minutes for undercooked French toast. Finally, we managed to get a table in the gambling room. The gambling room is a glass compartment closed off from the rest of the bar: so all the music was muffled. Some cameraman blocked us into the gambling room when...

A/V and The Moist Towelettes at Tribeca |
OCTOBER 20, 2007
Despite playing a very short set to a small crowd, A/V gave a powerful performance with his drum machine, tambourine and synthesizer. I had a great time dancing to his music and I wish the one-man punk and electro act from Gaspereau Forks, New Brunswick could have played a longer set. A/V shouted saucy and humorous lyrics into the microphone and performed sporadic dancing that resembled something Ian Curtis might pull off. A/V combines pictorial and provocative lyrics with pumping electro. The title of A/V’s latest album “Hot Action” pretty much summed up the night.
The Moist Towelettes are a group of DJs from Tokyo, Japan that “want to get you moist”. The two female vocalists decorated t...

Mother Mother |
OCTOBER 3, 2007
Vancouver band Mother Mother is an original and refreshing addition to the Halifax Pop Explosion. With only two years behind them as a group, Mother Mother has a very mature sound. Their 2007 album, Touch Up, has folk and indie roots and combines male and female vocals to get their message accross.
Their music is a social commentary about the artificial nature of people and the city they live in. Their music is all about getting back to their country roots and adopting a natural lifestyle. Their album art depicts a farm with a five headed chicken (very telling of our present situation). If you like the Pixies you should definitely check this band out because there is definetely a resembl...
