Watch your mouth
Part of my regular routine as a sports fan is to watch televised sports news programs and read articles in various publications. One of the things that drives me crazy is how freely certain words and phrases are misused. Take for example, the situation of a team trailing 2-0 in a best of seven series. Many people would refer to the third game in that series as a “must win” game for the team trailing the series. I’m sorry, this is simply not the case, if a team can loose a game and still be eligible to play another then they are not in a must win situation.

The reason I am bring this up is because of something I read concerning the ongoing Senior Men’s baseball playoffs. A fellow local jo...

Down but not out
The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry are one win away from returning to the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League final thanks to their win Sunday against the Truro Bearcats. Many baseball fans are probably ready to write-off the Bearcats, However I am not one of them. Sure, the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry are the defending league champions looking to win their fifth straight league title and they have a 3-0 lead in their semi-final series after an impressive come from behind 8-6 victory, but remember what Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over till its over”

If you don’t remember the New York Yankee hall of Famer‘s famous phrase and you need another reason to believe, baseball history is littered with many imp...

What Colour is your cap?
A baseball cap can represent many things, like your favorite colour, team or brand name. Baseball Canada has taken it a step further and now the baseball cap you wear can represent your skill level as a baseball player. The concept of the Rally Cap program has been adopted by Baseball Nova Scotia. The idea is to reward players between four and seven years of age with one of six different coloured baseball hats depending on their ability to complete designated sets of skills outlined in a report card type of evaluation. Already this summer 750 hats have been awarded to players throughout the province.
This is a definite change in philosophy from the way T-ball programs used to be run

Bluenose Baseball: where 80% can be better than 100%
Scoring 80% on a test is never better than 100%. No Olympian has ever been crowned champion before officially finishing their event, but in Bluenose baseball “a team must play in a minimum of 80% of its league games to qualify for playoffs.”

Upon reading this I thought to myself, there has to be more to it than that. Surely a team wouldn’t qualify for the playoffs simply by participating in most of their games would they? Shouldn’t the win/loss record matter, and why is a team only required to play in 16 of 20 regular season games? Armed with these questions, I called Baseball Nova Scotia in search of answers and Dave Ritcey, a Junior league player and coordinator of the Rally Cap progra...

Two thumbs up to Baseball Nova Scotia
Okay, my last name isn't Ebert or Roeper and I’m doing a baseball blog instead of a movie review, but I’m giving two thumbs up anyway. My two thumbs are pointed northward this week in honour of Baseball Nova Scotia and the supportive position the organization took on behalf of 12 year old baseball player, Olivia Palmer. Were it not for their insistence, coach Cecil Tatrie would probably still be a proud card carrying member of the good old boys club where no females would be allowed.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think its always a good idea for men and women to compete against each other in competitive sports, but at no level of play is baseball considered a contact sport, and it is ...

What If Barry Bonds Never Did Steroids. A Fantasy Tribute.
What If Barry Bonds Never Did Steroids. A Fantasy Tribute. As Barry Bonds finishes his final Major League season, dutifully playing left field for one of the worse teams in baseball, I'd like to pay tribute to the greatest player in the history of the game. That's right, the greatest player to ever lace em up. Barry Bonds never won a World Series, didn't break any signicant records like Mark Mcguire's 70 home runs, nor did he even come close to 700 like the babe and hammerin' Hank. Never challenged Dimaggio's 56 game hitting streak. Came about 1500 games shy of breaking Ripken's consecutive games streak. He just passed 3000 hits last season and he will pass 600 home runs this season. Certainly Hall of Fame achievements and a testement to his consist...  Read More.
